Planet Zoo 2's gameplay loop is the one the series is known for: build habitats, keep animals healthy, attract guests, earn money, expand. What changes is the toolkit around that loop, and three structural additions that Frontier has documented in detail on its own pages.
Three modes
| Mode | What the official copy says |
|---|---|
| Career | Join FEN, the Fauna and Ecosystems Network, in a fun-filled adventure around the world |
| Franchise | Build a global network of zoos and Wildlife Reserves and trade animals with other players |
| Sandbox | Enjoy unlimited creativity |
The FEN storyline is new for the sequel. Franchise mode's animal market was a fan favourite of the first game and returns with a wider network that now spans zoos and reserves.

Building and the Frontier Workshop
Construction stays piece-by-piece, the system the Planet games are famous for, with ready-to-place blueprints for players who would rather not hand-place every rock. The official copy confirms:
- Scaling, flexi-colour and pathing systems for detail work
- New foliage and terrain brushes for large-scale landscape changes
- The Frontier Workshop, where you browse and download player creations across platforms and subscribe to favourites

Scenery themes
The official marketing counts four brand-new scenery themes plus five returning themes from the original Planet Zoo, covering iconic architecture from around the world. Both numbers are stated in Frontier's own store copy, so this row is no longer a community guess. The community wiki's breakdown of which is which, spanning African, Classical, East Asia, Indian and New World alongside the returning directional sets, still has not been itemised by Frontier, so treat that list as reported.
Management
The management layer documented so far is the classic loop: construct habitats that keep animals thriving, draw guests in, raise your zoo rating and fund expansion. Guests get educational opportunities around the zoo, and shops and amenities shape their day out. Deeper economy details, staff trees and research have not been documented for the sequel yet.
FAQ
Is Planet Zoo 2 a sequel or a reskin of Planet Zoo 1?
It is a full sequel with new systems, aquariums, aviaries and Wildlife Reserves, on top of the series' building and management loop. What carries over from the first game is tracked on the series background page.
Does Planet Zoo 2 have mods?
It has the Frontier Workshop, an official cross-platform channel for player creations. That is the supported route for community content; no separate mod framework has been announced.
How long is the Career mode?
Frontier has not said. The FEN world tour framing suggests multiple scenarios, but no chapter count exists yet.
Where do the new systems fit?
The three structural additions have their own pages: the Wildlife Reserves release loop, the cross-player trading detail on the multiplayer page, and the new habitat types on the animal roster.
